Welcome to the Philspeed web site
Philspeed is an engine building company with a long standing reputation among the motor racing community for both the power and the quality of the engines that bear its name.
These days Philspeed, located in a small village between Newton Abbot and Torquay is David Phillips and Martyn Sweet. Two characters with different backgrounds but united by the shared vision of building outstanding racing engines. Dave's background is as an engineer who spent his early years with Cosworth in the late sixties and early seventies – the DFV, FVA and BDA era, in fact Dave's main involvement at Cosworth was with the BDA, an engine he has felt an affinity with ever since. Leaving Cosworth in the mid seventies Dave moved to the South West where he set up his own engine building business.
Martyn, on the other hand, has learned his trade through over 20 years in the motor industry, dealing with the complexities of modern vehicle technology. He has also been involved in motor sport through out this period, including working for Swift Racing Cars when they were based in Plymouth.
For many years Dave has been known as a carburettor specialist and it comes as no surprise that Philspeed concentrates on BDAs, Crossflows, Pintos, MAEs and Twin Cams with only Vauxhall red tops breaking the Ford monopoly. It is in Clubmans, Sports 2000 and Formula Ford (1600 & 2000) where Philspeed currently has a reputation for being one of the leading engine builders in the class.
One feature of Philspeed that stands out is the fact that they can carry out all the work themselves by having a wide range of engineering facilities available to them. They also use a number of proprietary parts that have been quietly developed over the years to give Philspeed engines the edge that is needed in competion.
Philspeed can undertake 'in house' head porting/skimming, block boring, dyno testing, bore/liner honing using the latest technology and, uniquely, highly accurate crank balancing using sophisticated computer controlled technology recently imported from the US. Dave believes that crank balancing is one of the vital aspects for Crossflow reliability and performance. They make up their own caps, clamps, chokes, carburettor internals and use their own specification steel cam followers and pistons.
Winning they say is everything and Philspeed can rightly claim more than their fair share of winners with their customer engines.
